London’s most prestigious location for Contemporary Middle Eastern Art, Lahd Gallery brings to you their latest forthcoming exhibition, of works by Greek artist Irini Gonou.

Using her teaching from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Ecole des Arts Décoratifs of Paris, Gonou uses sculpture to portray her research in world culture, and the way in which she explores it. Having presented her works in a number of exhibition including the XII Biennale of Paris, Gonou brings her works toLahd Gallery, for an anticipated 8 weeks.

This exhibition is an art quest which seeks to address and explore the healing and protective power of the written word as a specific cultural idiom and takes the form of a dialogue between Greek and Arabic culture. Using entirely natural materials such as textiles, fired clay, reeds, leaves, seed pods, eucalyptus bark and linen twine, the artist makes my her interpretations of amulets and clothing, magic bowls and talismanic objects whose poetry evoke a new magical language or realm of “written protection”. The two cultures, Greek and Arabic, with their distinctive indigenous scripts, are seen in dialogue with a continuous and life-affirming exchange and cross-fertilization of influences.

The artists states; “In my latest work “Al Khatt, the magic script”, I’m exploring calligraphy as a visual element, but mostly as a protective and curative talisman.”

The exhibition will run until 25 July 2012.

About IriniGonou:

IriniGonou was born in 1955 in Athens. She studied sculpture at the EcoleNationaleSuperieure des Beaux-Arts and after at the EcoleNationaleSuperieure des Arts Decoratifs where she has also worked as a workshop assistant for two years at the section of ceramic sculpture. She lives and works in Athens.

About Lahd Gallery:

Founded in 2005 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to create a focal point for women artists from the Gulf, Lahd Gallery soon became a well-known exhibition space on the contemporary art scene in the Middle East and has exhibited extensively throughout the Gulf and North African countries. In 2010, Lahd Gallery moved to its present location in London and has since become the foremost gallery promoting contemporary Middle Eastern art.

Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, former chairman of Friends of Cyprus inter alia, died peacefully at home on 19th February 2012, aged 78. Robin was a great man who worked hard for the people of Castle Vale and Erdington for many years, as MP for Erdington from 1983-2001 and then as a life peer, where he took the name of Castle Vale as his title, raising the profile of Castle Vale in the House of Lords, as well as elsewhere.

Robin was a champion of all those who worked to make and keep Castle Vale as the better place it is today. Robin’s legacy lives on in the people of Castle Vale and the continuation of the Neighbourhood Partnership Board in which he took pride as its long-serving chairman.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quaPJ89_u7g

With homelessness in the major Greek cities increasing by up to 1000 percent and many Greeks feeling the pressure of the economic crisis, a group of Greek speakers and phil Hellenes came together recently with the aim of raising funds and awareness for the problems confronting ordinary Greeks.

Under the banner of the Greek London Meet Up and supported by the South London Greek Community, a packed house crammed into highly rated Yia Mas Greek Restaurant on Friday, April 27 to help raise funds for homelessness and suicide prevention. The target charity was Klimaka, who have been at the forefront of raising awareness of the issues facing people in Athens.

In fact Klimaka have gained international attention with the media in countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada and Greece, recognising the work that they have undertaken through their shelter and outreach services in Gazi, Athens.

Whilst Gazi is a glamorous spot for late night clubs and bars, it is also the home of Klimaka who are working tirelessly to bring relief to struggling Athenians and providing a much needed suicide prevention line.

The event at Yia Mas was the first of many and what makes these events unique is that they are being organised by young Greek professionals from all parts of the globe, including Greece, Cyprus, UK and Australia.

Organisers have said that they received positive feedback from people in Greece about these events. ‘It demonstrates how Greeks can come together and show that we care, that we will not forget our friends in their hour of need in Greece who are struggling.’

‘Not only are we raising money and awareness of the problems confronting Greece, we are also bringing together Greek speakers and those interested in Greece. The event at Yia Mas was certainly a good example of people enjoying each others company whilst helping a charity.’

The next event is to be held at one of the premier Greek spots in London, if not in the UK, Mythopolis. With the sounds of the House Band of Mythopolis, it is anticipated that almost 100 people will converge at the venue to help raise funds for Greek homeless.

A special performance of belly dancing will also be held by The Sizzlers.
