The Net

netSunday, 11 March 2012; 7:00pm.

The Odyssey Classiki Laiki Orchestra will perform an anthology of classic songs associated with rembetika and laika, the music of Greece.

The Orchestra will devote part of the evening to songs which highlight the adverse consequences of being caught up in the NET of greed, indebtedness, poverty and emigration, as well as warfare, refugeedom and other misfortunes which have befallen Greeks over the years.

The Orchestra will also perform songs which underline that Greeks with roots in Greece, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Alexandria and elsewhere have an extraordinary capacity to emerge from adversity with ingenuity in their minds, strength in their souls and love in their hearts.

To lighten the mood from time to time, the songs will be interspersed with a few witty anecdotes (some in English and some in Greek) by invited guests with an interest in the history of Greek music.

The Odyssey Classiki Orchestra consists of Andreas Theodorou (bouzouki), Peter Georgiou (bouzouki) and Costas Oskis (singer / guitar) Shatis Ilhan (piano keys). They will be accompanied by special guest singer Maria Panou.

The Orchestra has received outstanding reviews from the Greek press and audiences at concerts held at the Hellenic Centre and other venues. The Orchestra always aims to deliver an authentic interpretation of songs associated with the legends of Greek music.
